Mouse and Rat Droppings

Mouse vs rat droppings

Mouse and rat droppings in Pittsburgh properties.

Dropping Size and Shape

House-mouse droppings average about 1/4 inch long. Norway-rat droppings may reach roughly 3/4 inch long by 1/4 inch in diameter and typically have blunt ends. Roof-rat droppings are approximately 1/2 inch long and more pointed.

Identification and Cleanup Precautions

Size and shape can help narrow identification, but droppings alone should not be treated as conclusive species proof.

The CDC advises against sweeping or vacuuming dry rodent urine, droppings, or nesting material. Instead, contaminated material should first be thoroughly wetted with an appropriate disinfectant, allowed the required contact time, then wiped up and disposed of while appropriate gloves and cleanup precautions are used. Heavy infestations require additional precautions.
